bulge sign

An assessment maneuver used to identify a joint effusion, esp. at the knee. The examiner tugs or “milks” the soft tissues medial to the joint laterally and superiorly and then presses on the lateral surface of the joint in the opposite direction. If a fluid collection bulges on the medial surface, joint fluid is present.
